Such is provided under Prime Minister Decision 1325/QD-TTg, approving the salt industry development scheme for the 2021-30 period.

The scheme aims to develop the salt industry toward efficiency and sustainability by making the best use of advantages of localities with salt production tradition in order to increase salt productivity and quality and diversify salt products to meet the domestic demand, while striving to seek salt export markets and create more jobs and increase income for salt makers.

By 2030, the total salt field area is targeted to drop to 14,244 hectares while the annual total salt output is expected to reach 2 million tons to meet the domestic demand. Moreover, salt making will be developed on an industrial scale with mass salt production regions formed in the southern Central Vietnam’s coastal provinces.

To achieve the above targets, the scheme sets forth several tasks, including investment in salt making development in association with processing and market, and application of science and technology in salt making and processing.

It is also encouraged to conserve traditional salt-making villages and enhance the state management of salt production in localities.

At the same time, investment will be poured into industrial salt-making infrastructure facilities to meet needs of chemical industry and provide sufficient raw materials for production of refined salt in Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces.

Meanwhile, for traditional salt making, infrastructure facilities and irrigation systems will be upgraded at salt fields in Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces.

The scheme also expects to pilot models where salt making and tourism are combined in traditional salt-making villages for salt processing, marketing and sale in salt fields such as Thuy Hai in Thai Binh province, Bach Long in Nam Dinh province, and Ho Do and Ky Ha-Ky Anh in Ha Tinh province.

Trade promotion and brand building for export of salt in Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh provinces are also part of the scheme.-
